What are temporary or immediate dentures used for?

Immediate dentures are just their name suggests – fitted immediately!*

These  that are provided to you before your teeth are extracted, while you wait for your gums to fully heal they will help provide some comfort.

When you need a tooth/teeth removed, you may not want to be without teeth for a long period of time while you wait for your gums to heal. You can avoid this by opting for immediate dentures, which means you have the denture made before your teeth are extracted, and placed by your dentist immediately after the removal of your teeth.

Immediate dentures can also help your mouth to heal after tooth extraction by ensuring that your gums are not exposed. This can help to stop bleeding, which promotes healing and is an overall more comfortable experience.

*a mould of your mouth must be taken before your teeth are extracted, a mould cannot be taken immediately after extractions and we recommend a 3 month waiting period for your gums to heal if you choose to remove your teeth before starting your denture journey.

What's involved in having immediate dentures fitted?

Immediate dentures are made before your original teeth are removed (this is not always possible depending on your situation).

A mould is taken of your teeth, and the immediate denture is created to replicate them. After the imprint of your teeth is taken, any required adjustments can be made. Following your tooth extraction, the immediate denture is ready to be inserted immediately.

As you can imagine, this requires a great deal of skill and experience on behalf of our dental prosthetists to ensure that the immediate denture not only looks great but feels comfortable too. Our dental prosthetists work closely with your dentist to ensure the best outcome for you possible.

What to expect from your immediate dentures

It’s important to know that it takes time for the mouth to adjust following a tooth extraction.

Healing is not immediate and your mouth may constantly shift as it heals and your gums change in size. As a result, you may need multiple temporary liners over this healing period.

Important tips to remember for your immediate dentures:

  • Your mouth will be swollen after your teeth are removed so your immediate denture will take this into account
  • Once this swelling has settled down, you may notice that your dentures are looser than they were initially
  • In your follow up appointment, your dental prosthetist or dentist will insert a temporary liner to put some padding back into the denture and ensure that it fits snugly
  • As the mouth adjusts, you may need multiple temporary liners as part of the healing process
  • The mouth usually takes 4-6 months to settle following extractions
  • When healing is complete, you will have a permanent put in your denture.
